Nearly two centuries ago, the creatures of legend, myth and fairy tale were outed to the general human population, much to their own surprise. A small group (relatively speaking) of creatures, tired of hiding what they really were from the general public exposed their true forms and powers in an attempt to shock the world into acceptance. The resulting backlash, fueled by fear and an already tense situation, started a war between the preternatural (aka "the other") and humans that devastated the world. And, for the most part, the ‘other’ lost.
Humans have always had (and continue to have) power in their numbers. That, their use of technology and desperate willingness to try just about anything proved invaluable. After all, even the tallest tales have a shred of truth to them.
The fae cannot stand the touch of cold iron.
Vampires and the sun do not get along.
Were and silver do not mix.
Demons are repelled by faith.
Lucky for the humans, all these myths prove to be true. However these myths do not cover all the bases. Some creatures were far better at hiding and policing their own people to keep other strengths and weakness hidden. Unlucky to the aggressive ‘other’ that were engaged in the war - the preternatural that managed to keep their true origins hidden continued to do so until forced to do otherwise.
Mages, Mutants, Half-breeds and creatures otherwise unclassified and undiscovered were forced into the open as well when the desperate measures of the human race forced them to turn to noxious and even suicidal weaponry to take out what they perceived as a threat……
Now we struggle to pick up the pieces of a ravaged world. What was once known as North America is the most inhabited landscape if only because it has the most breathable air. And even then what land has been chosen as our new home is barely larger in scale than Washington. The human race still has numbers, but only just. Darwinism quickly became dominant in the mindset of most remaining humans as couplings were arranged to ensure a stronger generation to come. Unintentionally, a hierarchy has been set up among the humans as the 5 people who originally aided the humans and led them to safety became distinctive and pinnacles for their survival.
Enter The Five Families.
However "the other" have not been sitting idle as humans try to return life to normal. Though they are aware the preternatural exist; it is getting harder to notice them - as those who chose to hide it hide it well. And most recently there is an open if subtle act of defiance as The Embassy has revealed itself only within the last decade - and has helped human and Other alike who happen to find it.
So the Families garner support though fear and familiarity - And the Preternatural work though the Embassy to gain loyalty though generosity and persistence. As always there are extremists in society that make both sides look bad - it's just a matter of who will drop the first bomb of the next war?
